During a retreat day last summer, I had inadvertently sat next to a hummingbird
feeder. I observed these beautiful birds
for quite awhile, noticing their unique behavior. A hummingbird will be beating its wings at
tremendous speeds, yet at the same time hovering in one place. One of these amazing creatures will dive into
the feeder then suddenly stop and quietly get nourishment. The hummingbird is a mixture of activity and
stillness. The hummingbird can be a bit
distracting as the bird jets here and there, sometimes in erratic movements and
this can be unsettling to those around.
I realized that day that this is how God made me. I am a human hummingbird. I move very quickly and move even when I am
standing still. However, I do stop when
I take spiritual nourishment. Some
people are unsettled by my extroverted personality. I am not the quiet author that visited my
house but rather the little bird that jets around and is constantly coming for
spiritual nourishment. I have to accept
who I am in Christ and how He made me, but I also believe that I need to
cooperate with the Holy Spirit and change some areas of my life.
